Ghosts

One of Ibsen’s most sensationalized and controversial plays, Ghosts tells the story of Helen Alving, a widow whose resentment toward her philandering late husband drives her to deny their son his father’s sizable inheritance. As Helen discovers that her son suffers from syphilis and has unwittingly fallen in love with his illegitimate half-sister, she is forced to decide whether to honor her son’s demand for euthanasia. Tested as a wife and mother, Helen discovers the myriad ways in which the ghosts of our pasts invariably come to haunt us, for better or worse.
