The six years which followed the publication of the second edition witnessed many significant developments in the law relating to civil liberties. As regards legislative developments, the passage of the Public Order Act 1986, the Prevention of Terrorism (Temporary Provisions) Act 1989, the Northern Ireland (Emergency Provisions) Act 1991, the Broadcasting Act 1990, the Official Secrets Act 1989, the Security Service Act 1989 and the Immigration Act 1988 have all precipitated widespread revisions of the text of this well-known student title, while important case law developments have been noted throughout.
