Hardcover book of 205 pages, first published in French in 1961 and this version in English in 1969. The author gives a comprehensive and readable account of the extraordinary Inca civilization, describing its social and political structure, the daily life of the people, religion, architecture and the impact of the Spanish conquest on the empire and its inhabitants up to the present day. The author states his belief that the problems facing the Indian inhabitants of Peru and Bolivia today are directly related to the brutal suppression of the Inca peoples after the conquest. He supports the idea that the Indian peoples of the region should form a cohesive force to take their rightful place in their countries and as the heirs to the great Inca civilization that their ancestors created.
