War for the Union: The Organized War to Victory 1864-65 is the 4th of 4 volumes on the Civil War by Allan Nevins, with each volume covering one year of the war. These works do not concentrate on the military campaigns and individual battles of the war but rather all of the support activities that allowed the Union to win the war, to include politics, commerce (industrial capacity, agriculture, transportation assets, etc.) foreign relations, popular support, and overall strategy for victory. Battles and campaigns and the overall progress of the war are certainly mentioned as victories and losses on the battlefield were in essence the ultimate measure of success. This volume, like the other 3, is a magnificent and readable look at all aspects of the 4 year civil war.
