The American Civil War (Access to History)

This volume provides an overview of the political, economic and social aspects of the American Civil War as well as a narrative of the main military events. The war is also considered in the wider context of international relations. Other chapters examine the debates over why the South lost the conflict, the process by which the emancipation of slaves became a Union war aim, and the role of African Americans. The impact of the war on African Americans both during and after the war is also discussed.
