Collected Letters
Description:
John Newton, former slave trader, is best remembered for his outstanding hymn 'Amazing Grace' - an all-time favourite. But Newton was also a prolific correspondent and in 1781 he published Cardiphonia, a selection of his religious correspondence which did much to help the Evangelical revival and was considered by many to be the pinnacle of his writing. The Collected Letters consists of the first section of this work - twenty-six letters to a nobleman, unabridged in this edition - plus a wide selection of other letters. Basing all his counsel in the Bible, Newton covers a range of topics from advice to a student going to college, help for the ill, dying and bereaved, to discussion on various important theological issues. Newton's special gift is to point people to Christ's love, whilst always stressing mankind's need of forgiveness.JOHN NEWTON (1725-I807) spent his early years at sea, eventually as master of an African slave ship. In 1764 he was ordained and offered the parish of Olney, where he wrote his masterpieces.
