Nursing Interventions Classification (NIC)

Developed by a research team at the University of Iowa, NURSING INTERVENTIONS CLASSIFICATION (NIC) standardizes, defines, and facilitates the appropriate selection of nursing interventions for nurses, including practicing nurses, nursing students, nursing administrators, and faculty. NIC includes 491 interventions: physiologic and psychosocial; illness treatment and prevention; health promotion; individual, group, family, and community; indirect and direct care; and independent and collaborative interventions.

Provides a standardized language nurses can use to describe nursing actions and communicate the function of nursing.

Promotes the development of decision-making skills in students.

Can be used to determine health care information systems needs or costs of service nurses can provide for the creation of a reimbursement system for nursing.

Demonstrates the impact nurses have on the health care system.

Contains interventions applicable to all health care settings, including medical-surgery nursing, critical care, emergency, pediatrics, geriatrics, community, and home health.

Features 58 new interventions, with 98 revised and updated, for a total of 491 nursing interventions.
