When Kansas entered the Union on the eve of the Civil War, she was poverty striken, demoralized by the drought of 1859-61, and disheartened by an economic depression. This account covers the significant era which followed, describing the political, military, social, and economic conditions of the state's first four years. Rescued from oblivion and misinterpretation are many important men and dramatic events of early Kansas and of the Civil War in the West.
