The Security Dilemmas of Southeast Asia

Using the recently revived concept of the security dilemma as a lens, Collins (politics, U. of Wales-Swansea) examines ethnic tensions, intra-ASEAN rivalries, and China's emergence as a regional great power, three of security issues facing the region. He locates the analysis of ethnic tensions in Burma and Malaysia, among others, within the security literature of the Third World; argues that the ASEAN way helped mitigate the security dilemma during the region's arms build up; and sees China emerging as a benign hegemon for its southern neighbors.
