Here's a study of the English country house as a recurring motif in modern fiction from the end of the nineteenth century to WWII. The author shows how a variety of novelists from Henry James to Evelyn Waugh and Joyce Cary consistently employed this traditional setting as an emblem of civilized community to set against the isolation and anomie so characteristic of modern life.
