Since long before, and for long after, AD 495 - when a vision of St. Michael appeared to Cornish fishermen on St. Michael's Mount - the wonders of the West Country have held an irresistible appeal. Including Devon, Cornwall and the great, wild expanses of Dartmoor and Exmoor, this is a land of ancient villages, historic houses, haunting archaeological remains and breathtaking scenery, which stands uniquely apart from the rest of England. It is also the legendary realm of King Arthur, the whispered haunt of smugglers and privateers, the secret abode of gaints and mermaids, and the source of inspiration for countless artists and writers.
