This catalog of American Federation of the Arts exhibition 83-41, which toured from June 1985 to December 1988, contains black and white and color photographs of almost 400 examples of Native American art such as jewelry, textiles, baskets, masks, dolls, the kerfed box shown on the cover, and many other items that show the unique Native American style and craftsmanship. The exhibit pieces are grouped into 9 different regions throughout North America. Ralph T. Coe has contributed 5 essays to this volume, entitled: "Off the Map"; Collecting American Indian Art: In the Field 1977-1985; Timeless Works of Art; Tradition: Speaking to the Present, Respecting the Past; and, The Non-Vanishing Indian.
