Description:

Excerpt from Geology of the Cape Cod DistrictInquiries in this field have been very limited in their number and range. Those instituted by the United States Geological Survey have resulted in a Report on the Geology of Marthas Vineyard, in the Seventh Annual Report of the Director (for 1885 a report on The Geology of Nantucket, being Bulletin No. 53 (1889) of the Survey series (both by the writer of this paper); a report 011 The Glacial Brick Clays of Rhode Island and southeastern Massachusetts, by N S. Shaler, J B. Wood worth, and 0. F. Marbut, in Part I of the Seventeenth Annual Report of the Survey for 1895 and the unpublished folios above referred to.The reader of the above-named published reports and of this paper will perceive that the Cape Cod district has unexpectedly revealed a considerable range of phenomena, the discussion of which is certain to throw much light on the geological history of the Atlantic coast line. Unfortunately the evidence concerning the succession of these phenom ena is of a very obscure nature, and it is therefore not surprising that in the reports above referred to some of it was misapprehended and much was not discerned. Nor must it be supposed that in the following pages anything like a final statement of the facts or of the conclusions to be drawn from them is to be found. Such a statement can not be expected until investigation has gone much further.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
