Description:

Excerpt from The Pipe-Rolls, or Sheriff's Annual Accounts of the Revenues of the Crown for the Counties of Cumberland, Westmorland and Durham, During the Reigns of Henry II., Richard I., And John: Published by Society of Antiquaries of Newcastle Upon Tyne The present volume contains the pipe-rolls of Cumberland, Westmorland, and, during vacancies in the bishopric, of Durham, for the reigns of Henry II., Richard I., and John. It has not been considered necessary to reprint the accounts of these counties for the thirty-first of Henry I., as the entire Roll of that year, the only one extent of an earlier date than the reign of Henry II., has been already published by the Commissioners of the Public Records. Not only are the pipe-rolls the earliest consecutive se1ies of Records, but the information which they contain is the most complete in the earliest portion of the series, when almost every branch of the revenue admitted of a territorial arrangement under the several counties.
