Description:

Excerpt from Scandinavian Literature: With Short Chronological Specimens of the Old Danish, Icelandic, Norwegian, Swedish, and a Notice of the Dalecarlian and Ferroe Dialects This is a very brief sketch of the language and literature of Scandinavia, taken from the introduction to the author's anglo-saxon Dictionary. F mm the old Danish (danska tunga), Normna or Icelandic tongue, sprung the modern Danish, Swedish, Norwegian, and those languages and dialects spoken from Greenland to Finland, from the Frozen Ocean to the Eideri. While it must be acknowledged, that a class of lan guages thus extensive deserves attention, Scandinavian literature has a peculiar claim from its singular poetry and mythology, given in the Eddas. Those who wish to enter more deeply into the subject than the limited space would here allow, may consult the authorities quoted in the fol lowing work. If they would see the northern poets in an elegant poetic dress, they will be much gratified by perusing Miscellaneous Poetry, and Select Icelandic Poetry, translated from the originals, with notes by the Honorable William Herbert, London, 1804, 2vols. 8vo. 168. Popular Ballads and Songs from tradition, manuscripts, and scarce editions, with translations of similar pieces from the ancient Danish language, &c. By R. J ameisou, m.a., Edinburgh, 1806, 2 vols. Gm. 213. Illustrations of Northern Antiquities, by Sir Walter Scott, R. Jameison, m.a., f.r.s and Mr. Weber, Edinburgh, 1814, 1 vol. 4to. 31. 38.
