The Crooked Lines of God: Poems 1949-1954 (Classic Reprint)
Description:
Excerpt from The Crooked Lines of God: Poems 1949-1954
In 1950 the straight writing, like the handwriting on the wall, that takes us where we least expect, took me to the poor. I had thought that year to enter the Franciscans but something intervened, and I was drawn to a Catholic Worker House in the Oakland slums - fourteen months, each a new crucifixion of the sensibility. The psychology of this phase 15 markedly Franciscan, as I understood 1t, modified by the first imbibing of the Spanish myst1es. Here too came crooked poems, but not so many; already the cramp was setting in. These constitute Part II.
