After almost four centuries of European rule, Kenya gained independence in 1963. Since then Kenyans have been working to create a society in which everyone benefits from the country's rich natural resources. Today, many Kenyans live in poverty and it is still a privileged few who reap the wealth of the country's cash crops. Environmental degradation threatens traditional lifestyles and the beautiful wildlife that attracts visitors from all over the world. Nevertheless, changes in health care, education and technology are improving life for many Kenyans.
