The reign of Alfred the Great saw the establishment of the first towns and the beginnings of an ordered society. The book looks at how everyday life changed and also explores the intricate jewellery, glassware and metalwork the Anglo-Saxons created during this period. The period was to end dramatically with the battle of Hastings, and the defeat and death of King Harold.
