The Alternatives to War: From Sanctions to Nonviolence

The Alternatives to War: From Sanctions to Nonviolence considers the ethics of the alternatives to war, such as economic sanctions, diplomatic pressure, military assistance, positive incentives, and nonviolent resistance, in the face of mass atrocities and serious external aggression. It provides a comprehensive assessment of the arguments for and against these measures, which have received relatively little attention in the literature. In doing so, itdevelops a normative account of the alternatives to war as a whole and argues that they should be pursued over military action. It concludes that this has significant implications for pacifism, just war theory,and the responsibility to protect doctrine.
