Engineers and Professional Self-Regulation: From the Finniston Committee to the Engineering Council

This work gives a detailed description of the negotiations that produced a chartered Engineering Council in Britain and explains how the Thatcher administration sought to change the engineering profession so it more directly served the needs of the industry. The author shows how the profession succeeded in preserving itself from statutory or industrial control.
