Architecture and Independence

Architecture reflects the spirit of its times, and in India the fight for Independence. In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries the British sought to embody the aims of imperialism in architectural form, while indigenous architects concentrated on retaining their Indianness.
Examining the forces that have shaped Indian architecture through these times, this profusely illustrated book traces the patterns of architecture and its response to political change in both India and the world since the founding of the Indian National Congress in the 1880s.
