Visibility and Power: Essays on Women in Society and Development

Written by scholars from around the world, these nineteen articles--all of which focus on gender relations--provide an international perspective on the anthropology of women. The first section, "Visibility and Invisibility," examines the various social mechanisms used to silence women, with special attention given to the situation in Iran. "Women, Power and Authority" looks at societies that grant considerable power and authority to women. The concluding segment, "Women and Development," considers the problems faced by women working in development in such countries as Malaysia, India, Brazil, and Yugoslavia.
