The Land-Leaguers (Trollope, Penguin)

Set in Ireland. When Philip Jones incites the enmity of Pat Carroll, a tenant, Carroll retaliates by flooding one of Jones's fields. His actions are witnessed by Florian Jones, Philip's son. Florian, a recent Catholic convert, has sworn an oath not to reveal the perpetrators of the deed.
