Pierre-Josseph Redoute' (1759-1840) was one of the leading botanical illustrators ,engraver and painter of floral art. He worked at the Jardins des Plantes in Paris and at Kew Garden in London. Among his patrons were Marie Antoinette, and in the early eighteenth century Napoleon's wife, Josephine, who was an avid rose collector. She continued to be his patron after the divorce. Redoute' helped create a new garden at Navarre.There he published his finest works, which were dedicated to lilacs and roses. Les Roses was published in 1816, which even today is one of the most famous and popular botanical studies.
