The Gift of Health, by UK-born Cornell professor Peter Nathanielsz, challenges the accepted wisdom that we are genetically programmed for disease. He asserts that life in the womb is the most significant aspect of our development, determining who we are and how we live after birth. Recent research has clearly demonstrated that the conditions in which we develop in the womb have a profound effects on our adult health, influencing our susceptibility to such diseases as coronary artery problems, stroke, diabetes and obesity in later life.
