A biography of the Russian writer Boris Pasternak, written to mark the centenary of his birth. Best known for "Dr Zhivago", he also wrote an autobiography called "Safe Conduct", two books of poetry, and translations of Shakespeare's tragedies. In 1958 he declined the Nobel Prize, and died in 1960.
