What is it like to be Jewish and American? Roger Kahn, himself Jewish, had his own answer, worked out through time and experience. But he wanted to explore it with others, so he launched a professional query.

Kahn met with hundreds of other Jewish-Americans in all walks of life. From them he selected a gallery of individuals who struck him as representative...among them a youth at his Bar Mitzvah, a comedian at his work, a concentration camp survivor in Hollywood, a doctor on his rounds.
