My Diary, North and South

This eyewitness account of the Civil War is written from the social and military perspectives. Vividly described by William Howard Russell, a British journalist who traveled with Union and Confederate troops from March 1861 to April 1862, the book has been edited by a Civil War historian, Eugene Berwanger. Unlike previous editions of Russell's diary that have focused mainly on military campaigns, Berwanger's new edition includes more on the social history of the Civil War, and integrates it into the political and military history. -- (Softcover)
