Abra: A novel

Abra is a beautifully written and sensitive novel about a woman who completely rejects her life as wife and mother to become a hermit. Abra achieves the peace she abandoned all for, accomplishing harmony of spirit and being. Everything is challenged, however, when Abra is sought out and confronted by the daughter she deserted, now an adult dealing with the pain and desperation left over from childhood. Abra`s daughter, Katie, is intent on convincing Abra that she must return to the world she rejected years before. Set in an isolated cabin, with no mirrors, no clock but the rhythm of nature, this is the novel for anyone who has ever imagined a life free from the demands of any other human, a life of responsibility only to oneself, a life of unshared joy and danger, weakness and strength. Abra was the Winner of the Books in Canada First Novel Award in 1978.
