Contemporary Astronomy
Description:
Even though the 1989 edition is a little out of date, this text is still one of the best (if not the best) astronomy texts of its kind. It is not only very easy to read, it is exciting too. The text treats the theory of light basically but very thoroughly. The author presents the relativistic aspects of light as it bears on astronomy in a clear and understandable manner. Pasachoff deals with stellar nuclear fusion and stellar evolution with unparalled clarity. He has an "illuminating" chapter on black holes. The text is somewhat lacking on cosmology, but, perhaps, that is best because of the many recent advances in that area. The last half of the book treats the solar system very adequately. The book is complemented with many helpful tables and figures. I would recommend Pasachoff's text for any serious reader who wants a first exposure to astronomy or who wants a thorough refresher on this wonderful subject. If you are thinking of waiting for the next edition, don't; get this edition
