This is a story of the restoration of her Norman manor at Hemingford Grey (which is Green Knowe). The story is the memoir of Mrs. Boston who purchased the house in 1939 and it is filled with "an abundance of colorful details: the comical neighbors, the neighbors who damned her as a spy, the creation of the garden; the eccentric servants, the concerts held by candlelight for pilots during the war; the friends and enemies who shared her life at the manor and the books she wrote there- all inextricably bound to the remarkable house."
