This 304 page textbook presents a comprehensive treatment of engineering design with a focus on solutions that are based on information technology. With capabilities of computers expanding at an unthinkable pace, the importance of using advanced computer-aided design (CAD) systems in engineering design must be emphasized. Pro/Engineer, a leading CAD system, is described to demonstrate the role of the computer in the design process. The book is written as an introductory text for undergraduate students in engineering in all specialty areas (e.g., mechanical, aerospace, civil, electrical, chemical, industrial and materials). The book should also be useful to engineers engaged in the product design.The book is organized into 10 chapters. The first three chapters provide coverage of topics important in engineering design. A practical approach following standards related to engineering graphics, dimensioning, and tolerancing is stressed. Representative examples are provided to demonstrate industrial applications. A systematic description of the Pro/Engineer design system is presented in Chapters 4-8. It covers feature-based solid modeling, preparation of engineering drawings, concept of virtual assembly, and parametric design. Chapter 9 presents applications of finite element analysis. Chapter 10 describes applications of numerically controlled machining. Both Chapters 9 and 10 demonstrate the integration of a CAD system and a computer-aided manufacturing system under the Pro/Engineer design environment.

The book is organized into 10 chapters. The first chapter provides a fundamental coverage of finite element methods. It stresses the mathematical and mechanical fundamentals, which support the development of finite element methods. Chapter 2 introduces the Pro/ENGINEER Wildfire design system and Pro/Mechanica, which is engineering simulation software to carry out finite element analysis. Chapter 3 focused on modeling a variety of load conditions. Chapter 4 focuses on modeling the boundary conditions of mechanical structures in general; illustrating the procedure of dealing the physical entities both at the component level and at the assembly level. Chapter 5 presents engineering analysis in the thermal domain. Chapter 6 presents an important branch of finite element methods. The branch is shell modeling through idealization. Chapter 6 also covers a review of the stress conditions so as to understand the mechanism of the engineering simulation software in the computing process. In Chapter 7, we focus on applications. Several case studies deal with engineering vibration analyses and buckling analyses. Chapter 8 introduces a specific concept called design optimization. Chapter 9 deals with the beam elements. Several examples related to mechanics of materials are presented. The engineering simulation system of ANSYS is introduced in Chapter 10. ANSYS is the FEA software most widely used in industry, not only nationally, but worldwide as well. The material assembled in this book is an outgrowth of a senior-level design elective course taught by the author at the University of Maryland at College Park for the past ten years. Moreover, this book is written in a style adaptable for self-study and reference.

The material covered in this book is an outgrowth of several design and FEA courses taught by the author at the University of Maryland at College Park. The first edition was published at the beginning of 1998. To address the need due to the evolution of the Pro/ENGINEER design system, and now the Creo Parametric design system, several editions were also published. This new edition is prepared for users, who are using Creo Parametric 3.0, a new release to the previous Creo Parametric 2.0 design system.

Chapter 7 focuses on assembly drawings with creating user-defined BOM tables. We also present case studies to detail the procedure of performing dynamic analysis through mechanism. Chapter 7 also illustrates the steps needed to add surface finish, dimensional and geometric tolerances through case studies.
