<p>The reputation of Richard Neutra (1892-1970) is founded on his finely executed and superbly landscaped domestic buildings. Born and educated in Vienna, where he was influenced by the leading European architects, notably Adolph Loos, Neutra developed the intense dislike of ornament that was to characterize his work. He emigrated to the U.S. in 1923 and in 1926 established a practice in California, where the majority of his buildings are to be found. His early fame rests on a technical tour de force, the Lovell house in Los Angeles (1928), featuring a prefabricated steel skeleton and suspended balconies, built on a steeply sloping site. His pioneering use of new techniques and materials was further encouraged by the Dutch industrialist C. H. van der Leeuw, whose financial assistance led to the construction of the V.D. L. Research house, Los Angeles (1933); but later, when the use of such strategic materials as steel was banned during the war, neutral was forced to revert to, for example, redwood, natural stone, common bricks and glass. High highly individual style is characterized by the adoption of plate glass for exterior walls, combined with overhanding eaves, outrigged columns and integrated pools, and by the exploitation of the subtropical California vegetation to create privacy. Although he designed a variety of large-scale buildings, ranging from the California Military Academy (1936) to public housing, office buildings, churches and schools, it was in his treatment of domestic buildings - among them the Nesbitt house, Brentwood (1942), the Moore house in the Ojai Valley (1952) and the Kaufmann house, Palm Springs (1946-47) - and in his brilliant adaptation of design to natural surroundings that Neutra's outstanding achievement lay. With 86 plates, 14 in color; 28 plans and drawings. This is part of The Library of Contemporary Architects which is devoted to the great 20th century architects who helped to create a modern architectural idiom.</p>
