Thinking Design Through Literature (Routledge Research in Design Studies)

This book deploys literature to explore the social lives of objects and places. The first book of its kind, it embraces things as diverse as escalators, coins, skyscrapers, pottery, radios, and robots, and encompasses places as various as home, country, cities, streets, and parks. Here, fiction, poetry, and literary non-fiction are mined for stories of design, which are paired with images of contemporary architecture and design. Through the work of authors such as César Aires, Nicholson Baker, Lydia Davis, Orhan Pamuk, and Virginia Woolf, this book shows the enormous influence that places and things exert in the world.

The National Design Museum in New York is one of the largest repositories of design in the world, with a collection of nearly a quarter of a million objects such as typewriters, tea pots, architectural renderings, lace, wallpaper sample books and posters. This celebration of the Museum's 100th anniversary, draws on its experience of a century of collecting, documenting and studying design. It also displays thousands of the Museum's most prized exhibits. In January 1992, the Cooper-Hewitt Museum hosted a four-day symposium entitled "The Edge of the Millennium." This event brought together architects, planners, and designers under one theme. Thirty-six speakers participated in an interdisciplinary debate that focused on critical issues of immense relevance to all the design professions. The four day symposium elicited dramatic pronouncements and provocative calls for action from the participants.
