Excerpt: ... APPENDIX. Page 32.--Mr. E. Paitter has a square metal-gilt table-clock of the fifteenth century, with square silver pillars at the angles, and silver borders at the top and bottom. In the panels of the doors at the three sides are niello medallions nf the Lion of St. Mark, Augustinus Barbaricus, and Leonardos Loredamis, Doges of Venice. On the fourth is a silver dial showing the hour, the days of the month, and the signs of the zodiac in gold on blue enamel. A cupola top encloses the bell, on the lower part of which is an inscription. The height is seven inches and seven-eighths. Mr. G. H. Norland has a hexagonal metal-gilt table-clock of the beginning of the sixteenth century, in the form of a battlemented tower, with a dome-shaped top covering the bell. On one of its sides is a dial, the centre of which is ornamented with translucent enamel flowers. The height is eight incites. Page 56.--Mr. W. B. Stopford has a silver-gilt clock of French work, about 1520. It stands on a hexagonal pedestal; the panels of gold scrolls on blue enamel having iu the centre of each a medallion with a projecting head in carved ivory. It has enamel pilasters at the angles, resting on six claws and agate balls. Above this is a glass cylinder showing the works, and a silver dial with an index to show the minutes, a gilt border at top and bottom, set with garnets, and six scroll brackets supporting a pierced dome set with garnets, round the edge of which are triangular ornaments and dragons' heads, with small amorini between holding shields, and a largo figure of Mars pointing with a spear to a white enamelled globe at the summit, on which are painted the numerals denoting the hour. Page 19. In Hindostan are many giant figures, cut out in stone, some in excavations, and some upon the surface of the earth. Of the last kind are three gigantic statues at Bamian, cut in stone, clear from the mountain of which they once formed part. The tallest is about seventy cubits high, and the shortest about twenty cubits. Page 44. (rough, in his edition of Camden's Britannia, 1789, mentions that at Lugna Clogh, near Sligo, was a cromlech of large stones, under which human bones had been found, and which was called the Giant's Grave. In the same county, certain caves, cut out of the rock of Corren, were called the Giant's House, the almost inaccessible entrance to which had a path about one hundred paces long before it, also cut out of the rock. At Ballymascandlan, near Dundalk, in Louth, was a cromlech of an oval form, twelve feet long by six feet wide, weighing between thirty and forty tons, and resting upon three other stones. This was called the Giant's Load, and was said to have been brought there by Parraghbough M'Shaggean, a giant, whose grave, a cell of stonework twenty feet long by five feet wide, was to be seen near it.
