This volume is a collection of methodological developments and applications of simulation-based methods that were presented at a workshop at Louisiana State University in November, 2009. The first two papers are extensions of the GHK simulator: one reconsiders the computation of the probabilities in a discrete choice model while another example uses an adaptive version of sparse-grids integration (SGI) instead of simulation. Two studies are focused specifically on the methodology: the first compares the performance of the maximum-simulated likelihood (MSL) approach with a proposed composite marginal likelihood (CML) approach in multivariate ordered-response situations, while the second examines methods of testing for the presence of heterogeneity in the heterogeneity model. Further topics examined include: education savings accounts, parent contributions and education attainment; estimating the effect of exchange rate flexibility on financial account openness; estimating a fractional response model with a count endogenous regressor; and modelling and forecasting volatility in a bayesian approach.

Hence it is quite as important that the public mind should be rightly informed up on great general principles, as that there should be the right sort of rulers to apply them. In popular systems, especially - such as our own, for in stancebthere are problems of a disturbing in&#64258;uence constantly arising from the very freedom upon which such systems are founded; and the free discussion of which in a popular form, is indispensable to their prop er appreciation by the masses. Such discussion is par ticularly well for a people, who, in high success, are so engaged in the concrete, as to overlook, ordinarily the abstract of things and who by not habitually consulting principles must be liable to all the evils of a want of them. Such discussion is farther recommended by the fact, that a sound administration of a government, can never be assured by mere events. The right and the wrong of politics strike deeper than the surface of a&#64258;airs; and though great prosperity may stand up, from day to day, in commendation of a system of adminis trative policy, there may be hostile in&#64258;uences working underneath, which may upheave all that is worth hav ing, in the foundation on which all rests.
