In the 1970s, droves of young women migrated away from big cities to rural settings across North America. Many settled on the north coast of British Columbia, an area of harsh weather, rugged landscapes, and indescribable magic. There, they found freedom, community, and a revolution in sexual mores that many had never experienced. They established lasting friendships, criss-crossing through each other's lives, while living through adventurous and freewheeling times, testing the limits of their endurance by surviving in a sometimes harsh climate. The reasons for their migration were as varied as their personalities: some wanted to go back to the land and live a simpler lifestyle, some were looking for work, some were escaping the U.S. in protest against the Vietnam war, and some just wanted to see a mystical place they had previously only heard about. This book compiles the memoirs of 34 of these women. In very personal reflections on their lives, they chronicle the history of an area that was still rough around the edges. They also describe in detail the triumphs and heartbreaks of uprooting themselves from their familiar surroundings and moving to an unknown land of unspoiled beauty.

Jane Francesca Agnes, Lady Wilde (1821-1896) was an Irish poet and mother of Oscar Wilde. She wrote under the pseudonym "Speranza" and famously supported the Irish nationalist movement. She also had a particular interest in folktales, which she collected.  About the Author 
Lady Jane Francesca Elgee Wilde (1821-1896) was an Irish poet, activist and the mother of famed playwright and poet Oscar Wilde. Early on in her career, she wrote under the pen name 'Speranza' and fought for Irish independence through her articles and poetry. She had a special interest in Irish folktales which she gathered and recorded, culminating in her anthology Ancient Legends, Mystic Charms and Superstitions of Ireland. She also contributed some writings of Irish folk tales to the Celtic revival anthologies created by W.B. Yeats. Stephen Reid (1873-1948) was a Scottish painter and illustrator who developed a particular interest in historical subjects and costume. He was elected to the Royal Society of British Artists in 1906 and he is well known for his illustrations for myths and legends. Sir William Wilde (1815-1876) was an Irish author, eminent physician and father of Oscar Wilde. He wrote many significant works on medicine, archaeology and Irish folklore.
