It looks much better than the original printing in comic books or any other subsequent reprints. The Complete Carl Barks Index SPECIAL EDITION

This book is primarily concerned with the classical music catalog of Mercury Living Presence recordings recorded and published by the Mercury Record Corporation. Mercury Records made some of the finest and most natural sounding audio recordings ever made, mostly of excellent and committed performances of classical music. But this is not a history of Mercury records or even of the Living Presence series of recordings. My main focus was to create a list of all the Mercury Living Presence classical records. I am mostly interested in the stereo recordings, but there are also many earlier mono recordings of great interest, too, so I have included those also. Specifically, what is included is information on the SR 90000 series of stereo recordings and the MG 50000 series of mono recordings, but there is also a listing of the Wing classical reissue series. ***** Decades ago, when I began collecting Mercury records, and years later when I started collecting the CDs, I was looking for a complete list of all the Mercury Living Presence records and later the CDs. Though I found some information that was helpful, to get what I wanted, I had to make the list myself. I started with lists of records on the record sleeves of the albums, got some information from The Absolute Sound! magazine, and in the internet age, found useful information on several internet sites, but mostly to get the list I wanted, I had to dig up the information and build it myself. Having completed the list, it occurred to me that other collectors might find it helpful, too. So I put together a group of databases and spreadsheets in Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Works database format files and issued the databases I had created on a CD-rom disc in early 2013. By that time I had all the original series of CDs mastered by Wilma Cozart Fine, and many of the records that had been reissued on CD, and virtually all of the stereo records not issued on CD, plus most of the mono records in which I had a strong interest. Now it is available as a book. Among other things it includes the following lists: Complete Mercury Living Presence CDs, including every CD, with its track information, identifying Composer, title, soloist, conductor, orchestra, CD #, LP where originally published, and recording date. Complete Mercury Living Presence LPs including every LP with its track information identifying Composer, title, soloist, conductor, orchestra, LP #, CD on which it was reissued if any, and recording date. Different versions of the files are arranged by: Composer and Title, Recording Date, Record number, and CD number. There are also a listings of LPs and LP tracks that have not been reissued in the Mercury Living Presence CD series. Included are listings of all original Mercury Living Presence records in the SR 90000 and MG 50000 series, all CDs originally mastered by Wilma Cozart Fine, all SACDs, and the more recent reissues and new issues in the large 50+ CD box sets and the 10-CD box sets of Marcel Dupré and Janos Starker. There are also a few chapters of background information, little known facts, and other topics of interest. Hopefully readers will find it interesting and useful.

The Complete Carl Barks Index LARGE PRINT INDEX EDITION

Original proofs of the stories and covers written and drawn by Carl Barks exist and are used worldwide in reproducing his work. But for a few stories, there are no existing proofs, and the only way they can be reprinted is by making new masters of the work from printed comic books. Given the poor quality of the printing process used for the old 10 cent comic books, stories reprinted that way often don't look very good when compared to stories with modern printing from original proofs. This book reproduces some of my attempts to get a better quality image for stories for which there are no known original proofs. Barks' only Porky Pig story, "Porky of the Mounties", now has been restored with new black line art plates and completely recolored. Barks' Andy Panda story and the Barks written Droopy story "Serum to Nome" have also been restored with new black line art plates, which help the art stand out from the coloring. The coloring on these two stories, while not completely new, has been cleaned up and the color registration has been greatly improved. This allows the art to be seen more clearly and better appreciated.

This book reprints, for the first time in one compact volume, all 36 of the non-Disney stories written and/or drawn by Carl Barks for Western Publishing and published under the Dell Comics label. Every story that Carl Barks wrote or drew featuring Disney characters during his career as a comic book creator has been reprinted, often many times, in comic books and albums, and books. The Disney work is the most important of Barks’ work, but he also wrote and/or drew these 36 other comic book stories featuring non-Disney characters between 1943 and 1953. These have been less-well served in reprinting and are much less well-known. They are generally comparable in quality to the average of the Donald Duck work he was doing at the same time. A few of them are quite creative and delightful, and stand well with the best short story work he was doing at the time. 31 of these stories were published in the MGM Our Gang Comics between 1943 and 1947. All were drawn by Barks and all but five were written by Barks. The other five were scripted by another writer near the end of this period, but Barks heavily edited them and made them more like his own writing. Original proofs of the artwork for all of these stories exists and has been used for their reproduction in this book, in pristine black and white just like the original artwork, yielding a unique opportunity to see the beauty of Barks’ pen and brush work, especially as printed here, larger than in the original comic books and with much better reproduction. During this same time period Barks drew two other stories from other writers’ scripts, one for the Walter Lantz character, Andy Panda, and the other for Warner Brothers’ Porky Pig. Original masters for these two stories no longer exist, but I have recently done color restorations of these stories in another book, Restoring Carl Barks, and have used the newly created black line plates (augmented by some grayscale in the Andy Panda story) for their black and white reproduction in this book. Finally, in 1952-1953, Barks wrote three more Droopy stories, in addition to the two early stories published in Our Gang Comics; these three stories were drawn by Harvey Eisenberg. Original proofs were used for reproducing two of the stories. No proofs are known to exist for the other, and the newly created black plates used in Restoring Carl Barks have been used instead. The three non-proof originated stories look significantly better in color and some readers may want to supplement this book with one of my color books, Restoring Carl Barks or The Unavailable Carl Barks (in color). Or you may wish to buy the SPECIAL EDITION of this book, which costs $20 more, because it includes the color versions of the three non-proof originated stories. The SPECIAL EDITION is printed using much more expensive color printing. Although the 33 proof originated stories are still black and white, the color printing process gives the black lines a little greater density and intensity making them look even blacker. For some readers this deeper blackness may justify the added expense. The SPECIAL EDITION is also now available on Amazon.
