This is a comprehensive account of ancient Greek quantitative metre from its beginning to the seventh century A.D. An introductory chapter touches briefly on the nature of metre and the presumable development of Greek metre from Indo-European syllable-counting verse-forms, and then goes on to a detailed description of Greek prosody and a discussion of rhythm and some other general questions. The arrangement of the rest of the book is broadly chronological allowing a clearer overall view of historical trends and of the characteristics of versification at different periods than is given by the usual method of discussing each metrical category separately once and for all. The longest chapter is devoted to Drama. A short Appendix outlines the relationship between Greek and Latin metre.

Greek Metre

This two-voume work, now reprinted in one volume, provides the standard critical edition of the early Greek iambic and elegiac poets. The first volume, revised and updated in 1989, includes Archilochus, Hipponax and the Theognidea while the second volume, updated in 1992, includes fragments of Simonides' elegies and fragments of a comic poem attributed to Homer. The poems are presented in theoriginal Greek without English translation.

Since the appearance of the first edition in 1971-72, Iambi et Elegi Graeci has been widely acknowledged as the standard critical edition of the early Greek iambic and elegiac poets. The work has now been thoroughly revised and brought up to date by the incorporation of the latest new material. In this second volume the major additions are the important new fragments of Simonides' elegies, some from a long narrative poem on the Battle of Plataea, others from personal poems of high literary interest and quality. There are also new fragments of the comic poem Margites attributed to Homer, and of Tyrtaeus. A supplementary word index has been added to take account of the changes and additions in the two volumes since the first edition.
