<p>The aim of this book is to provide a chronological overview of the history of the world from 600 B.C. to the present, concentrating particularly on the men and women who contributed importantly to shaping their times - and our own. To that end, the book is divided into sections covering each 25-year period from 600 B.C. through 1975. Each section opens with a brief description of historical events and trends of the time; this description is followed by brief biographies of the most important figures who were active during that period. The book is arranged in two-page spreads; on the left there is a column listing the names of people who were living at the opening of each period, but who were no longer as active as they had been earlier; their ages as the period began are supplied. On the right readers will find a list of the historical figures who would attain importance in a later period, but who had not yet reached the peak of their activity when the period closed; their ages at the end of the period are supplied. An index is provided to permit immediate access to every historical figure listed in the book. In addition, portraits of many of the figures whose biographies appear here are supplied.</p>
