The workshop “People on the Move: Framework, Means, and Impact of Mobility across the East Mediterranean Region in the 8th to 6th Century BC,” held at the University of Basel in Switzerland from 3-6 August 2015, which forms the basis of this volume, addressed the question of how the increased cross-regional mobility of people and commodities in the wake of the Kushite, Neo-Assyrian, Neo-Babylonian, and early Achaemenid expansions into the eastern Mediterranean affected travelers, the communities they left behind, and the communities that received them. As demonstrated by the papers published here, the diversity of the sources this period and place requires a large number of specializations, both within the various area studies and regarding cross-regional connectivity.

<p>Im Zentrum dieser Studie stehen die ikonographischen und textlichen Zeugnisse der Achamenidenzeit, die den persischen Grosskonig als Herrscher uber Agypten ausweisen. Melanie Wasmuth zeigt, dass in Agypten eine wesentlich breitere und diversifiziertere Quellenlage zur Verfugung steht, als in der Regel zur Untersuchung der Perserherrschaften uber Agypten herangezogen wird. Zumindest fur Darius I. lasst sich anhand der Quellen beobachten, dass der Herrscher in Agypten in vier verschiedenen Rollen inszeniert wurde: als persischer Grosskonig, als agyptischer Pharao, als agyptischer Gott und als agypto-persischer Herrscher. Besonders die Verschmelzung der beiden absoluten Herrscherkonzeptionen eines persischen Grosskonigs und eines agyptischen Pharaos zu einem integrierten, agypto-persischen Konigtum erlaubt Einblicke in die angewendeten Strategien der Herrscherprasentation und kulturubergreifenden Identitatskonstruktion. In der Persis liegt der Fokus primar auf der Reprasentation des Weltherrschaftsanspruchs als persischer Grosskonig. Doch zumindest ab Xerxes I. und explizit im Kontext der Wiedereingliederung Agyptens ins Achamenidenreich unter Artaxerxes III. wird daneben ein agypto-persisches Konigtum im Achamenidenreich propagiert.</p>
