Veteran cars are those made not later than 1918 and were thus the earliest motor cars to appear on the roads of Britain. The first models basically comprised the frame and bodywork of a horse-drawn carriage fitted with a petrol engine, but during the period up to the First World War they became much more comfortable and efficient vehicles. This book describes how the motor car developed from its unpromising origins in the 1880s and 1890s, when motoring was mainly a hobby for wealthy eccentrics, until it came to be seen as a serious means of transport. About the authorMichael Ware is the retired Director of the National Motor Museum at Beaulieu. In 1959 he formed his own photographic business specialising in motor-racing photography. Many of Britain's navigable waterways now carry more traffic than they did in the supposed heyday of canals, though the traffic today is pleasure boats rather than commercial craft. This book traces the history of these artificial waterways, from Roman days through to the decline of commercial traffic in the 1950s. It covers the building of canals, the structures that make them work, their maintenance and the boats that travelled on them. The cargoes carried are given prominence, as are the 'people of the cut'. The last chapter shows the canals in decline, giving some of the reasons for the closure of many waterways, and describing why pleasure boating has now taken over.

The scenes depict the waterways, some of which survive but only in sections, and the various goods that were carried up and down the length and breadth of the country. Previously published in 1979 in two volumes entitled Britain's Lost Waterways. Extended captions provide fascinating historical detail to accompany the photographs.
