<p>English summary: Flavius Josephus locates the place of John the Baptist's confinement and execution at Machaerus (Antiquitates Judaicae XVIII 5,2). The fact of John's imprisonment is attested by all the Gospels, and their accounts are consistent with and complement that of Josephus. The intention of the author is to situate the archaeological site in its New Testament context, in order to elucidate the blurred scene of a biblical site, and reconstruct it as clearly as possible in the light of 21st century historical, archaeological and architectural research. Italian description: Macheronte e la fortezza erodiana, nell'attuale Giordania, in cui, secondo la testimonianza di Giuseppe Flavio, Giovanni Battista fu condotto prigioniero e ucciso. Questo volume (in inglese) raccoglie - per la prima volta - i risultati delle campagne di scavo dal 1807 ad oggi. Archeologi francesi, tedeschi e americani si sono avvicendati nel corso degli anni, ma campagne su vasta scala sono state condotte soprattutto dagli archeologi francescani dello Studium Biblicum Franciscanum e, attualmente, da un'equipe ungherese. The intention of the author unbrokenly remained the same: to  elucidate the blurred, historical scene of the Gospels, and  present it as authentic as possible for the future generations.  The Reader through these pages will be convinced that since the  spring of 1968, when Machaerus was still a virgin, untouched  archaeological site, the development of the excavation field work  can be tracked consistently, the uncovered monuments in the  archaeological site are genuine and reliable, and all deriving  from the archaeological time capsule from ca. 90 BC to 71 AD. As  archaeology is a visual discipline, we had to use a lot of  illustration once again. The present work has five integral  parts, all of which are the artistic, scientific and field  research results of the last three years: 2013, 2014 and 2015.

<p>The coastal acropolis of Taposiris Magna, 45 km west of Alexandria on Egypt’s north coast, was founded by Ptolemy Philadelphos II in the early third century BC. Between 1998 and 2004, Hungarian excavations, led by charismatic archaeologist Gyozo Vörös, revealed many of the hidden secrets of the history of this important site. Within the Egyptian-style pylons and enclosure walls, the team discovered the foundations of a Greek-style sanctuary―the only Greek temple so far found in Egypt. That sanctuary was carefully and deliberately dismantled in the Roman period in order to turn the whole temple into a garrisoned fortress: columns from the sanctuary were used to heighten the enclosure walls. Later, at the end of the fourth century, a Christian basilica was constructed inside the fortress complex, and the temple became a monastery. This fully illustrated book reveals all the discoveries of the Hungarian excavations at this remarkably protean site, including plans and reconstructions of the Greek sanctuary and the Byzantine basilica, as well as a series of stunning finds: a beautiful basalt statue of Isis, a cache of Roman bronze cultic paraphernalia, and a hoard of Byzantine gold coins and jewelry.</p>
