Meinhard von Gerkan and Volkwin Marg are considered to be among the most acclaimed architects worldwide. Their projects and completed works have in fact attracted international attention. The present book focuses on the models produced over the years and therefore offers a unique look into the creative process of the architects. Of primary importance is the quality of the designs and buildings which is already easily discernible in the models. What is also perceptible is the need to maintain and further develop the high standards which had already distinguished the early projects. The architects seek no short-lived trends or superfluous effects; on the contrary, what they consider of utmost importance is their sense of social responsibility which, in a firm of such dimensions, is translated into no shallow pathos but rather into a daily commitment. "Architecture is an art that is applied in society. The result is the product of a dialogue." (Meinhard von Gerkan) Given the large number of the buildings and competition designs (from among 256 award-winning works, 98 have received first prize) not everything can be included in the annals of architectural history, but the essential components of their work and that of their staff cannot be overlooked: namely, the attention to structural details, the material-oriented design and a simplicity based on usefulness - all elements which, in the best examples cited, have attained a level of self-evident naturalness.

The oeuvre of von Gerkan, Marg and Partner is a part of Germany's architectural history, a demonstration of contemporary architecture and its vision for the next millennium. In this volume, the diversity and high aesthetic quality of the office's most recent buildings and projects are documented. In a play between form and function which does not yield to fashionable trends, their architecture proves once again to be art with a social purpose, "a shell in which to work and live" (Kristin Feireiss). The spectrum of this volume encompasses their activities from the years 1997-1999, including the lecture theatres at the university of Chemnitz, the pavillion of the Christian churches at the EXPO 2000 in Hannover, the new building for the Dresden Bank at the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin, designs for the German School in Beijing and the trade fair in Rimini, Italy and their visions for the new airport Berlin Brandenburg International and their plans for the city of Hamburg. Finally the book documents the folding bridge in Kiel, development in collaboration with J rg Schlaich and the design for Germany's new Metropolitan train.

Over the last six years, the Hamburg firm of von Gerkan, Marg, and Partner--gmp, for short--has designed more than 100 projects for clients in China, 5 of which have been completed and 20 of which are in planning or construction stages. Preeminent among them is a city made entirely from scratch, a harbor enclave near Shanghai for 800,000 inhabitants. Lingang New City has been conceived in concentric rings around an artificial circular lake; gmp's plans show everything from a city archive to theaters and churches and convention centers fulfilling its function while retaining a distinct modern identity. Texts include Bernd Pastuschka's essay exploring the ideal city, illustrated with urban plans dating from 1493 through Le Corbusier, and an interview with Meinard von Gerkan, who cites as the biggest challenge his practice faces in China "the Gamba ceremony during every dinner, that tries to test our ability as Europeans to hold our drink."
