Tracking the development of American "neighborhood unit" concept in independent India’s planning practice and literature―from the national level policies to on-the-ground applications in the city of Jaipur―Vidyarthi explains how a host of actors including neighborhood residents, squatters, politicians and developers made different kinds of plans that assimilated the design concept in line with their practical concerns and cultural preferences creating unique variants of neighborhood urbanism over time. The authors, Sanjeev Vidyarthi and Pratiksha Singh growing up in several different regions of India, studied together at the Sir JJ School of Architecture in Mumbai. Between the two, they accomplished a lot including the foundational work around the establishment of Jaipur's leading design practice of the time, and the simultaneous conception and building of Rajasthan state's first school of architecture, even while finding the time to pursue the vocation of teaching.
