Thomas Sch++tte is a catalog of works by this contemporary German artist. Sch++tte studied under Gerhard Richter, Benjamin Buchloh, and Bernd and Hilla Becher at the D++sseldorf Academy in the 1970s. He comes from that strong conceptual background, but as his career matured the emotional content of his work evolved and became much more potent. Sch++tte's work is incredibly eclectic: ceramic figures, architectural models, drawings, outdoor sculptures, photographs, and installations. A recent work, Big Spirits (1996), is a collection of larger-than-life-size aluminum figures that seem to be morphing before one's eyes. They are at once ghost, human, and machine. Also riveting is The Innocents (1994), a series of photographs of the heads of handmade figurines, and United Enemies, A Play in Ten Scenes (1993)--offset lithographs, also of figurines wrapped in Sch++tte's clothes. His watercolors are beautiful, ranging from drawings of fruit to portraits of women. Whatever the project, Sch++tte is tapped in to a particular humanity.Included in the book are essays by Julian Heynen and Angela Vettese, an interview with James Lingwood, and an essay by Roman philosopher Seneca, chosen by the artist. In The Walking Artist, Hamish Fulton documents his peripatetic self and its relationship to the world through which it moves. Fulton--born in London in 1946--initially studied sculpture, but in 1969 he turned to an artistic activity based on walking and graphic record of the walk. The Waling Artist documents various ''walking pieces'' from the early 1970s to the present day. Included are walks across all kinds of terrain--hills, mountains and forests--in regions as diverse as southern England, Peru, Bolivia, northern California, central Australia, Nepal, Japan, Baffin Island in Arctic Canada and France. "Walking is the constant," he declares, "the art medium is the variable."

Haim Steinbach builds his work around the relationship that ties man to objects; he interprets this bond as being a projection of one's emotional life. As visiting professor at the Ratti foundation, Steinbacj lead 25 students in the discovery of the value of objects. His course resulted in two exhibitions: one by the students and the other by Steinbach, who juxtaposed the panorama of Lake Como with objects found near the Hudson, and with photographs taken at the Tempio Voltiano (which celebrates the invention of the battery.
