The Battle of Belleau Wood in June 1918 was the first major engagement between the Germans and U.S. Marines. The Germans were stunned to find that not only could the Marines fight, but they were also deadly marksman who were incapable of quitting the field of battle until it was theirs. Today, Bois de la Brigade de Marine and the surrounding woods, small towns, and farmland appear much the same as it did a century ago. The battlefield remains scarred with the impact craters from artillery and the trenches and defensive positions carved into the ground by a previous generation of fighters. With the creation of Colonel William T. Anderson’s, USMCR (Ret) field guide, visitors can now walk the area with the history of the battle in their pockets and at their fingertips. This guide was written based on Colonel Anderson’s experience leading staff rides and private tours of the battlefield and will give readers the ability to experience the terrain on their own.Colonel Anderson led Marines on tours of Belleau Wood for 10 years while stationed at Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe in Belgium. He served as the officer-in-charge, Reserve Augmentation Unit and Deputy Chief of Staff, Headquarters Marine Corps Forces Europe, from 1992 to 1998. From 2009 to 2017, he served on the adjunct faculty of the Command and Staff College’s Distance Education Program, Marine Corps University, Quantico, Virginia. He has published numerous articles and notes about Belleau Wood in the course of his career. This field guide serves as an excellent addition to our U.S. Marines in World War I Commemorative Series and as a useful tool for Marines, historians, and all those interested in the battle.

Since the invention of the Bushnell Keg in 1776, mine warfare has been an important element of naval warfare. The use of mines and countermeasures to mines has figured significantly in every major armed conflict and nearly every regional conflict in which the United States has been involved since the Revolutionary War. Mine warfare has been increasingly important and effective since World War I. Mines presently on the world arms markets are relatively inexpensive, easy to procure, reliable and effective, and difficult for intelligence agencies to track. The mine, as a weapon system, has an extremely favorable investment return (cost of mine to cost of damage ratio) for the miner. Despite the logic and effectiveness of maintaining the mine element of war at sea on an even footing with the other naval warfighting specialties, throughout its history, the U.S. Navy has devoted proportionally fewer resources to mine warfare. As a result, despite the emergence of the U.S. Navy as the world's premier maritime power whose individual warfighting capabilities generally are superior to those of other navies, its mine countermeasure capabilities have lagged behind. The old adage that those who will not learn the lessons of history are doomed to repeat them has persistently applied to the mine warfare aspect of the U.S. Navy. North Arabian Gulf operations of the U.S. Navy in Desert Storm contain some bitter experiences, including the mission-aborting mine strikes to two major warships, as well as the controversy over the decision not to land U.S. Marines in Kuwait. Despite the unfortunate nature of the initial Desert Storm experience and the need to recapture expertise in MCM, the U.S. Navy and Allied navies did have substantial success in countering the nearly 1,300 naval mines deployed by the Iraqis and emerged victorious in the MCM element of Desert Storm warfighting as in the other aspects of that war. This positive conclusion to the mine clearance campaign in the North Arabian Gulf was because of the unparalleled material and logistics support from the Department of the Navy's shore establishment and the cooperation of many allied nations in the coalition effort. In addition to national support and multinational cooperation, the enabling elements of this success were the ability of the American Bluejacket to learn and adapt quickly, combined with good tactical command in the fields. Of special note is that as the course of the mine clearance campaign progressed, the Naval Component Command leadership came to understand, appreciate, and support the complex warfighting nature of mine clearance operations.

The Marine Corps Martial Arts Program: The Complete Combat System

The complete manual to the fighting system of the United States Marine Corps.The Marine Corps Martial Arts Program (MCMAP) was designed as a synergy of mental, character, and physical disciplines with application across the full spectrum of violent encounters. Following the British defeat at Saratoga, New York in 1777, the British government developed a strategy to mobilize loyalists in South Carolina and reestablish royal authority in the American southern colonies. In the early winter of 1779, Lieutenant General Sir Henry Clinton conducted an offensive military campaign intended to control the southern colonies from the bottom up, from Georgia to the Chesapeake. In the absence of French naval support to the colonies, Clinton conducted an expeditionary operation to seize Charleston and commence operations throughout the interior of South Carolina. Although enjoying early success with the capture of Charleston in May 1780, the British force found itself engaged in a bloody and protracted conflict with American guerrilla fighters, militia, and semi-organized Continental Army units for the next two years.Following Clinton's departure, Major General Lord Cornwallis executed Clinton's Southern Campaign in the Carolinas with a stream of tactical successes; however, within two years, the campaign to restore the crown's authority in the American Southern Colonies resulted in cataclysmic operational and strategic failures. The British strategy and offensive campaign was defeated by militarily inferior force, in a rural territory, through a hybrid form of conflict that directly contributed to the British defeat at Yorktown in 1781.The rebel effort led primarily by General Nathanael Greene, Commander of the Continental Southern Department, and local leaders, Francis Marion, Thomas Sumter, and Andrew Pickens, implemented a form of hybrid warfare that exhausted British resources and eroded British will to fight. While Lord Cornwallis' operational design missed the mark, each of General Greene's tactical defeats contributed to his operational success.
