<p>This work contains the largest collection of private claims ever published, listing about 60,000 claims for compensation from the U.S. Government for the period 1789-1849. Many of the claims were for Revolutionary War service, such as invalid claims, and for War of 1812 and other military services, including compensation and indemnity for supplies and services. Other claims were for confirmation of title to land in Louisiana, Mississippi Territory, and Michigan; bounty lands in Illinois and Indiana; and for various services performed for the U.S. Government, such as transportation of the mail, delivery of hospital equipment, etc. The entries are arranged alphabetically by the name of the claimant, with information in tabular form such as nature of the claim, where presented, and action taken. Our publication is a reprint of the 1853 edition, which was printed as House Miscellaneous Documents, Series 653-655.</p>

Travel agents provide a service that most Americans take for granted. Unlike many other businesses, most Americans do not have daily contact with travel agents. We often forget that travel agents play a vital role in ensuring that Americans reach their intended destinations. They are a critical small business in many American communities. This Congressional hearing exams issues that are affecting the financial viability of the travel agency business. Technology has progressed to the point where many consumers are no longer using travel agents to purchase tickets or plan their holidays; rather they are using the Internet to investigate fares, see pictures of resorts and make reservations. New companies such as OneTravel.com and Orbitz were formed to take advantage of this new technology. This new technology even has affected how the federal government contracts for the provision of travel agency services. If there are cheaper and better ways for businesses to provide services than through travel agents, then the market has spoken. Travel agents will have to adapt to the changing economy just as many other small businesses have in the information age.

In the quest for new and inexhaustible sources of energy, solar energy has become a promising contender. However, several factors prevent solar energy from falling freely into the Earth's surface, leading to the concept of collecting solar energy in space and beaming the energy to receiving units on the ground. Studies to date have not identified any barriers with regard to technical feasibility, and discussions with a number of respected scientists were told there are no scientific breakthroughs required. Yet solar power satellites do represent very large engineering endeavor. There are serious technical, environmental, economic, and other issues which require technology verification for resolution. These 1979 Congressional hearings presented a wealth of information from technical societies, cognizant Federal agencies, environmental groups, and the originator of the concept.
