In the late 1930s renowned Polish poet Julian Tuwim, was asked to write three poems for children. The publisher Przeworski connected the three poems into one book, Locomotive, and commissioned illustrations from celebrated Polish illustration duo Lewitt and Him. Locomotive was the beginning of a creative partnership that lasted many years.
Featuring the original three poems, Locomotive, The Turnip, and The Bird’s Broadcast, children learn what’s inside each train carriage as it chugs along, how many people, animals, and friends it takes to pull a turnip from the ground, and what happens when birds of all kinds gather for a meeting in the woods.
After its original publication in 1939 in Polish, Locomotive was swiftly translated into French and English the next year, appearing at a time when it would have been a surprise and a joy to encounter bright colors and modernist- inflected imagery. The Locomotive, by Julian Tuwim, is one the most famous Polish poems for children. Designer Ma� ‚gorzata Gurowska and journalist Joanna Ruszczyk present its graphic and literary reinterpretation for adults. Tuwimâ€™s poem stimulates the imagination with a description of contents in wagons of a train sitting at a station. Although the poet is remembered today primarily as the author of poetry for children, he is also renowned as a satirist who critically described the political-social reality of his time. Gurowska and Ruszczyk, in The Locomotive/IDEOLO, make reference to Tuwimâ€™s social awareness and frequently uncompromising stance, using the text of his poem as a framework for presenting their own position concerning the situation in present-day. In their version, the railway wagons are full of Jews, aggressive football fans, soldiers, gays and lesbians, animals, as well as inanimate objects. It is all accompanied by political commentary, summarizing inequality and social injustice. In this way, the authors challenge not only Polish reality with difficult questions about national identity, racism, anti-Semitism, and attitudes towards ecology and animals.

The poet, lyricist, and translator Julian Tuwim (1894 – 1953) was a major figure in Polish literature. In 1918, he was one of the co-founders of the Skamander group of experimental poets who broke with the nationalist aim of poetry to focus instead on the common people. Tuwim’s work was wide-ranging and included writing songs for the cabaret as well as beloved children’s verses. In 1935, he was awarded the Golden Laurel by the Polish Academy of Literature.
