This is a book about social differentiation and distinction in one of the ethnically and politically most complex regions of the world, dealing with crucial issues in currently renewed debates on cultural pluralism, nationalism, irredentism and ethnic dispersal. The themes are given a regional and historical focus by treating peoples within the Tai-speaking regions of mainland South East Asia, namely the two basically Tai states, Thailand and Laos, and Tai areas in Burma, China, Vietnam and Malaysia. The book examines representations of non-Tai peoples by various Tai, and representations of Tai by others, and the related experiences of each as they have interacted with different Tai political spaces. The historical scope includes contemporary policy debates on 'nationalities; of 'minorities; policy in the light of earlier colonial and pre-colonial situations.

William Turton (1825—1900) became the most experienced and respected developer of urban transport in northern England. Turton began a hay dealership at age 19, becoming a large-scale corn, fodder, and coal merchant. He invested in livery stables, cabs, and horse omnibuses. He was a founding director of Leeds Tramways Company, and chairman for most of its existence to 1896. As a borough councilor for many years, he was close to decision-making, and ran risks of insider dealing and conflicts of interest. With Daniel Busby he pioneered tramways for most northern cities (including Bradford, Manchester, Liverpool, Sheffield, Nottingham, and Newcastle). He adopted steam engines alongside horses, the real heroes of the story. His great-great-grandson reveals his fascinating life story.

When British diplomats McLeod and Richardson set out on their missions to the Tai states in December 1836, their aim was trade and friendship. Captain William Couperus McLeod and Dr. David Richardson, both of the East India Company Madras Army, traveled from Moulmein on elephants, horses, and in the caravans of traders, to the present-day regions of the Shan States in Burma, northern Thailand, and Sipsong Panna in China. As the first Europeans to officially visit the region, they experienced some extraordinary social and cultural encounters. McLeod and Richardson had been in action in the first Anglo-Burmese War (1824–6) and had experience of other missions in Burma and Siam. They were fluent in Burmese and had a basic knowledge of Tai.
